Jim
Coates's work is the first of, what the Copper Mine Picture Cafe
hopes to be, a long and continuous list of shows by a variety of artists. Dr.
Coates has been painting for well over 20 years, developing a style that merges
areas of long term interest and concern. On a purely formal level, where sign
engagement of perceptual data is a factor of shape, color and value, there is
often a refiguring of the visual landscape to suggest layers of interpretation
that might not otherwise be apparent. In some works the changes in a given subject
are minor, in other works the setting is purely imaginaary. Major considerations
for these "sign" distributions are aesthetic in nature. From the perspective
of theory, aesthetic meaning ( the
felt
experience) presupposes a Freudian subtext as well as certain environmentally
conditioned responses. These psychological issues are veiwed from the platform
of a phenomenological take on the world; this leads to a meta-theoretical position
that Heidegger referred to as Being, or the idea of feeling ( aesthetic meaning)
as a kind of absolute truth.
